Nearly Year Two

We really enjoyed watching the Year 2 performance of Mavi Catches the Sun and we are looking forward to being in Year 2 . On Thursday we had transition morning and went to Chestnut Class. In maths we have been looking for patterns in numbers and in English we learnt a poem about travelling in a railway carriage . We then imagined we were travelling through Redbourn and used adjectives and adverbs to describe what we could see, hear and feel.

What can you do?

This week in English we have been writing character descriptions for Jim and the giant in Jim and the Beanstalk. We thought about their appearance , personality, likes and dislikes.


" I would be Jim's friend because because I could go on an adventure with him". Annabelle.


In Science we have been learning to think about what we can do with our hands.

In topic we have been rolling  thin strips of paper to use for quilling.

Assembly and School Fair

We hope you all enjoyed our assembly this morning, Mrs Bentley and Mrs Orchard were very proud of our speaking and sharing our learning so confidently. We really enjoyed reciting the poem and singing the kite song.


We  have had a very busy week as on Tuesday we had a visit from the Herts Air Ambulance which landed on the school field. It was very noisy but also very exciting.


In maths we have been learning about time thinking very carefully about the position of the minute and hour hand on o'clock and half past the hour. We have also been thinking about position and rotation. We have been using maths words , such as a quarter turn, half turn , clockwise and anti clockwise.


We hope to see many of you at the school fair tomorrow. There will be lots of fun stalls including a tombola, raffle, BBQ and we can buy the wind chimes which we have decorated.

World Wind and Green Day

We celebrated World Wind Day on Thursday by making pinwheels, number fact kites, blow painting and using construction kits to make wind turbines and windmills. We had a fun session! We learnt that wind farms are built where it is hilly and they are used to make electricity. We also found out birds have different shaped wings or flying. A  vulture has a broad wing to help it hover in the air and a swallow has narrow wings to help it fly fast through the air.


In English we recited a poem by AA Milne about the wind and we hope to share this with you in our assembly in two weeks time. We used action to help us remember the poem.


In PSHE we have been thinking about caring for the environment.
Today is Green Day and we have been recycling clothes into different items for a fashion show next week.

Splash Dance

We have had a busy week. In maths we have been using the 100 square to practise adding and subtracting ten. We have been thinking about how many tens and how many ones there are in a number.

We have been solving missing number problems.


In music we played the instruments using a score.

In Dance we are creating our own Splash Dance. We were thinking about moving slowing showing different ways to get into a swimming pool.


We practised skills for Sports day in our PE lesson.


On Friday it is Green Day and we can wear something green. We also need to bring into school an old t-shirt or a piece of clothing that we can reuse to make belts, bags, hats, tops etc.

May Dance

We hope you all enjoyed the May Dance this morning. The children enjoyed dressing up and learning the dance.


Well done to all of the children who took part in the Fun Run. They proudly wore their medals in Celebration Assembly today.


In Design and Technology we explored making stable structures using construction kits, newspaper and playdough and cocktail sticks. We found out that it is best to start on a flat surface and to create a large area for the base. We had to build a tower that was 50cm high.


In Maths we have been exploring 3D shapes . We have been describing them using maths words such as faces, edges, vertices, circular and rectangular. Some of us in Learning Through Play  made our own every day 3D objects using nets.

Finding half

In Maths we have been learning to find half. We have been finding half of groups of objects, shapes and a whole. We know that when you halve a group of objects they are share into 2 equal groups.
We have also been learning to share into quarters. We enjoyed sharing how we found half at home using different objects.


In English we have been writing our own stories using the picture book Journey. We thought really carefully about writing the beginning, middle and end. We used wow words, conjunctions and some of us used speech marks in our writing.


In Geography we have been looking at where we live. We used maps to locate where we live and learned there are 7 continents and we live in the continent of Europe.

Alica's Magic pen

In English we looked at a book which had no writing. The book was called Journey. We looked carefully at the illustrations and  used our imagination to write what we thought might be happening.
We used wow words to describe the setting and the characters in our story.

The Big Splash!

This week we have continued with our learning about canals. In English we have organised the facts we know about canals into sub headings.


In maths we have been counting in 2's,5's and 10's . We have been learning  to multiply.
 4x 2 = 8 
There are 4 groups of 2


Also we have been thinking about repeated addition.
2+2+2+2=8


We have been practising our May Dance with our partners.


In Art we had fun  looking at the work of the artist David Hockney. We  created our own swimming pool pictures, mixing either white or black to create tones and shades. Then we used paint and collage materials to make a swimmer for our pictures. It was fun!


Class photos are next Wednesday.

Rickmansworth Canal Trip

We have had a very busy week , but fun week! On Wednesday we visited Batchworth Lock Canal Centre in Rickmansworth. We learnt that canals are man made. We helped to open the lock gates to let the canal boats through. The gates were heavy to push and pull.
We dressed up as Victorian children and did some washing using a washboard and dolly. The dolly helped to get the clothes clean.
We saw a very old working wooden canal boat called The Roger. It was so tiny inside! There was a pull down bed which everyone had to sleep in and a tiny "cupboard" for the baby to sleep. 
We went on a boat trip along the canal and found out that in the olden days a horse would pull the boat using a rope by walking along the towpath.
In English we have been sequencing the day on the canal and using this to help write a recount.


In Maths we have been learning about multiplication. We have been practising to count in 2's, 5's and 10's to help with this.


In Computing we have been learning to insert a picture into a word document using the laptops.


In Dance we have been practising our May Dance with our partners.


We have been learning about the different food groups in PSHE and why we need certain  foods to keep us healthy.

Welcome Back

It sounds as if you have all had a fantastic break and the children  have come back to school ready to learn.


For our Easter Challenge we grew cress seeds in eggs and pots and decorated them. The winners from Year 1 were Maddy and Ellis. Well done! Enjoy eating your Easter egg prize.


In English we wrote about our Easter holidays, we all had lots of fun. We also listened to and then rewrote our own version of My House is Your House. Mrs Bentley was very pleased with our writing.


We have been solving lots of problems in maths.


In RE we have been learning about welcoming babies into the Sikh religion.


We are looking forward to our Canal trip next Wednesday.


Today we have had lots of fun raising money for the Redbourn Fun Run. We have been practising our running skills.

Red Noses and Sunflowers

We have been busy this week practising for our performance. We are very excited because today we will be having a dress rehearsal. We are looking forward to performing to you all next week.
We have all dressed in red today and brought in money for comic relief. In PSHE we thought about what we would like our money to buy and who we would like it to help.


In maths we have been practising our number bonds to 20.
" I know that 8+12 = 20 and that 12+8=20 because in addition you can switch the numbers round" Jemima.


In Creative writing we have been using our sense to imagine that we were travelling down a slide. We had to think what it felt like and what we might see and hear at the bottom of the slide.

I want My Hat Back!

In English we listened and enjoyed the story of I Want My Hat Back.We sequenced the story and we used adjectives to describe the Bear's hat.

Book Week

We have had lots of fun this week celebrating book week. We have enjoyed sharing our favourite books in class and Harry brought in The Tale of Tom Kitten which was his mummy's favourite story when she was a little girl. We have been using our imagination to write our own stories, and have been writing creatively about bubbles, describing how they move.We used words like floating, twirling, bobbing and swirling.


In maths we have been problem solving. We had to find different ways  to make 12 using the  number of sides of different shapes. We also  learnt how to play a  maths strategy game called Totality.


In computing we have been learning to search and insert images into Powerpoint.


In gym we practised our star jumps, thinking carefully about bending our knees when we land.We used the apparatus.

St Albans Cathedral

We have had a busy week . We enjoyed visiting St Albans Cathedral on Tuesday. We looked at the Rose window with its magnificent colours and then took part in a stained glass workshop. We went on a maths trail also, and looked for 2D and 3D shapes in the Cathedral. We also looked at the symmetrical patterns on the floor tiles.


In English we have been practising writing formal letters and wrote letters to the Cathedral to say thank you for our visit.


In maths we have been using maths words to describe 2D shapes. We used words like curved, equal length, straight sides and corners.


In PSHE we have been thinking about keeping safe.


Next week is book week. There will be a book swap table outside the Year 1 classrooms and we will be taking part in different reading and writing activities throughout the week. If you have a favourite book which you would like your child to share with the class please send it in.

Visiting India

In English this week we have been creating our own fact sheets and leaflets about India. We used non-fiction books and the  ipads to research information. We found out that Indian  people eat flat bread and rice with all of their meals. We also learnt that the school year starts in April.


 
In topic we  drew designs taken from William Morris and will be using these to print our own wallpaper. we had to look carefully at shape, size and texture and looked closely to make further  improvements on our designs.


In maths we have been adding different coins to find a total.


We are looking forward to our trip to St Albans Cathedral after half term.


Have an enjoyable half term and we shall be back in school on Monday 20th February.

Double Trouble



Thank you to all of you who came into work shadowing this week, the children enjoyed showing you their learning.


In English we have been creating our own fantasy settings and read the story of Billy's Bucket. We used our imagination to create our own fantasy world inside  the bucket.


In Maths we have been learning doubling and halving. We used different resources to help us.


Our home learning this week is to take part in the RSPB bird watch and to record what we see.

Colourful kaleidoscopes

In maths we have been using different resources to solve missing number problems.


On Wednesday we went to Forest Schools. It was sunny but very cold. We used natural materials , to make a portrait of a friend.


" I used leaves for the hair and moss for the eyes" .Annabelle


" We used pine needles for the eyelashes". Zanthi


In Art we have been colour mixing. We leaned that the primary colours are blue, red and yellow.


"Purple, orange and green are called secondary colours". Ben


"If you mix red and blue together you will get purple". Milly


In English we have been writing character descriptions about Goldilocks.


"Goldilocks is greedy because she ate Baby Bear's porridge." Erin


" Goldilocks has curly golden hair and she is taller than Baby Bear." Emily Cocker 


In Science we made kaleidoscopes using  sequins tin foil and cardboard. We had to fold the card into a triangular prism. It was fun.

Fantastic writing!

We have been doing lots of writing this week first we wrote a recount about what we did on Christmas morning when we woke up. We had to think about using time connectives like then, next and after that. We also thought carefully about using full stops and capital letters and reading our work through to make sense. Then we wrote a story called My House is Your House. Mrs Bentley was very pleased with our writing and we were very proud too.


In computing we have been giving instructions verbally and drawing symbols to help a friend find treasure. We were using positional language words, such as straight ahead, turn left and turn right. We challenged ourselves to use quarter turns and half turns.  We learnt that giving instructions is called an algorithm, and when using a computer is called programming.


In gym we have been thinking about rocking and rolling from side to side as this half term we shall be learning different types of rolls.  


The Home Learning for this week is to practise counting in 2's and 5's using objects and to record in your own way.


Snowy and Tidy Up Tiger are having a rest this week but will be excited to go home next Friday.

Welcome Back

Welcome back ! Firstly thank you for the  presents and good wishes for Christmas. We hope you have had an enjoyable and restful Christmas break. The children have come back keen to share their holiday news and are ready to start learning about our new topic called Kaleidoscope.


Next week on Wednesday we shall be having our Forest Schools session so please make sure the children have wellington boots and warm outdoor clothing. .


Our games sessions will take place outdoors so again please can you ensure the children have a tracksuit top and jogging bottoms to wear.
