We have had lots of fun this week celebrating book week. We have enjoyed sharing our favourite books in class and Harry brought in The Tale of Tom Kitten which was his mummy's favourite story when she was a little girl. We have been using our imagination to write our own stories, and have been writing creatively about bubbles, describing how they move.We used words like floating, twirling, bobbing and swirling.
In maths we have been problem solving. We had to find different ways to make 12 using the number of sides of different shapes. We also learnt how to play a maths strategy game called Totality.
In computing we have been learning to search and insert images into Powerpoint.
In gym we practised our star jumps, thinking carefully about bending our knees when we land.We used the apparatus.
Our Learning Owl this week is Maddy who has been taking her learning forwards and persevering in her learning. Have fun with Snowy.

We have had a busy week . We enjoyed visiting St Albans Cathedral on Tuesday. We looked at the Rose window with its magnificent colours and then took part in a stained glass workshop. We went on a maths trail also, and looked for 2D and 3D shapes in the Cathedral. We also looked at the symmetrical patterns on the floor tiles.
In English we have been practising writing formal letters and wrote letters to the Cathedral to say thank you for our visit.
In maths we have been using maths words to describe 2D shapes. We used words like curved, equal length, straight sides and corners.
In PSHE we have been thinking about keeping safe.
Next week is book week. There will be a book swap table outside the Year 1 classrooms and we will be taking part in different reading and writing activities throughout the week. If you have a favourite book which you would like your child to share with the class please send it in.

In topic we drew designs taken from William Morris and will be using these to print our own wallpaper. we had to look carefully at shape, size and texture and looked closely to make further improvements on our designs.
In maths we have been adding different coins to find a total.
We are looking forward to our trip to St Albans Cathedral after half term.
Have an enjoyable half term and we shall be back in school on Monday 20th February.

Colourful kaleidoscopes
In maths we have been using different resources to solve missing number problems.
On Wednesday we went to Forest Schools. It was sunny but very cold. We used natural materials , to make a portrait of a friend.
" I used leaves for the hair and moss for the eyes" .Annabelle
" We used pine needles for the eyelashes". Zanthi
In Art we have been colour mixing. We leaned that the primary colours are blue, red and yellow.
"Purple, orange and green are called secondary colours". Ben
"If you mix red and blue together you will get purple". Milly
In English we have been writing character descriptions about Goldilocks.
"Goldilocks is greedy because she ate Baby Bear's porridge." Erin
" Goldilocks has curly golden hair and she is taller than Baby Bear." Emily Cocker
In Science we made kaleidoscopes using sequins tin foil and cardboard. We had to fold the card into a triangular prism. It was fun.
Our Learning Owl this week is Ben who has been challenging himself with his learning. Have fun with Snowy.

Fantastic writing!
We have been doing lots of writing this week first we wrote a recount about what we did on Christmas morning when we woke up. We had to think about using time connectives like then, next and after that. We also thought carefully about using full stops and capital letters and reading our work through to make sense. Then we wrote a story called My House is Your House. Mrs Bentley was very pleased with our writing and we were very proud too.
In computing we have been giving instructions verbally and drawing symbols to help a friend find treasure. We were using positional language words, such as straight ahead, turn left and turn right. We challenged ourselves to use quarter turns and half turns. We learnt that giving instructions is called an algorithm, and when using a computer is called programming.
In gym we have been thinking about rocking and rolling from side to side as this half term we shall be learning different types of rolls.
The Home Learning for this week is to practise counting in 2's and 5's using objects and to record in your own way.
Snowy and Tidy Up Tiger are having a rest this week but will be excited to go home next Friday.
Enjoy the weekend and watch out for the snow.
